Wellness Toolbox: Navigating Change

with Lindsey Kolb, RYT-500

Changes, large and small, are an inherent part of life. Whether changes are positive or negative, they can be challenging to navigate and are often accompanied by a flood of emotions. Mindfulness can improve resilience and ability to cope with change. Here are some ways you can mindfully work with change:

  1. Accept that change will happen. When confronted with change, many instinctually fight or resist it. Allow yourself time to pause and notice uncertainty, even if it is uncomfortable. Practice observing and accepting things as they are right now. Be open to the possibility that this could be an opportunity for growth.
  2. Notice your thoughts and emotions about change. Changes are accompanied by emotions and thoughts and can be perceived as good or bad depending on the observer. It’s important to notice and honor the way you feel and think as you navigate change. Being mindful of your thoughts and emotions can help you choose your response, instead of reacting in a habitual way that may not serve you. Consider journaling or meditating to help recognize your thoughts and emotions associated with change.
  3. Manage expectations and adapt in your own time. Naturally, many of us want to adapt to change quickly. It’s important to remember that adjustment takes time. Notice if you are expecting too much from yourself or comparing yourself to others. Allow yourself to take things slowly if you need to and adjust at a pace that is right for you.
  4. Practice Equanimity Equanimity is remaining calm and even tempered no matter the situation. Practicing equanimity can be aided by bringing your attention back to your breath, tuning into your body, or meditating.

The next time you are confronted with change, consider this reminder from BKS Iyengar: “Change is not something that we should fear….For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom, and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they’re meant to be.”
